The self help book that has had the most impact on me this year is “The ONE Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results” (Amazon affiliate link). I borrowed it for free through my Kindle Prime in December.
It’s a really empowering read. It asks a really simple question, and really, if you can get yourself into the habit of asking/answering/doing this, you don’t even have to read the book:
What’s the ONE Thing you can do such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?
Even the screen saver on my computer now says “What’s the one thing…” (guests are like “huh…” I have yet to explain it).
I find answering that question to be a very reliable compass.
I made a video on Friday where I said that I’d be better at making sites if I just knew Foundation better. Oh wow, so obvious what the ONE Thing I should be doing was, eh? And so last night at 6pm I found myself trying to watch every single video on the new docs pages Zurb just released.
And holy shit, I know what I’m doing now.
Really, these videos are PERFECT.
I am changing all of my grids to the flex grid!
For real, check out how powerful flex grids are for creating interface layouts. I was still using the old grid, which will be replaced by default by the flex grid in Foundation 6.4, so I might as well start learning and using it now.
Beyond the grid, the explanation of the accessibility features in Foundation in the videos were great. I’ve always been wanting to someday learn how to make sure my sites were set up for screen readers and other visually impaired visitors. Now I know that making little decisions such as which way to use a button have an impact on the way that the site is interpreted by non visual readers.
I have about 2 more hours of Foundation stuff to do right now probably, then a few hours of work, e-mails…
And then what’s my ONE Thing after that?
Started the Namevantage theme from scratch to use all of this new Foundation stuff.
And when I get deep in NameVantage, I’m sure I will end up deep in Woocommerce docs and tutorials, as well.
Hopefully the new Namevantage theme will be up Monday night sometime and then the alpha of the “marketplace” will be up June 1st with a few sellers to test it out.
It’s a good book. And Foundations is an amazing framework.
